CSA

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food direct from farm. Typically, members or “share-holders” of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the upcoming growing season.  However, many Haywood County CSA memberships are available for “buy in” on a weekly or monthly payment schedule.

In return, CSA members receive shares in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production.

Most CSA boxes are available weekly or bi-weekly. Some farms also offer a “mix and match” or “market-style” CSA.  Refer to individual farms for membership details.

Learn more about our unique CSA memberships from our March 10, 2020, interview with the NC Rural Center. Don’t miss the video interview at the bottom that includes our farming partners, members and community stakeholders.

Tucked in a cove in western North Carolina Mountains, our three acre farm is unique in that we live in an old barn that has be remodeled into our home. We have four beautiful sheep who are the source of all of our fiber. We grow lots of veggies and flowers by organic processes.

Seasonal CSA memberships available. In addition to vegetables and eggs from Our Fiddlehead Farm, a CSA box will include vegetables from Terry and Steve King of King Harvest Farm, flowers from Nikki Irving of Flourish Flower Farm; and as an add-on, grass-fed beef, chicken, eggs, and quail from Adam and Jada Henson of Shady Brook Farm & seasonal fruits and honey from KT Orchard & Apiary.

SHADY BROOK FARM

Shady Brook Farm is a multi-generational farm in Henson Cove, just south of Canton, NC. We raise grass only beef as well as pasture raised poultry – eggs, chicken and turkey. Adam and Jada Henson operate the farm along with Adam’s father, Doug, and the farm property has been in the Henson family for a number of generations. U.G. Henson, Adam’s great-grandfather, gave it the name we are still using – Shady Brook Farm.

The farm has traditionally been a cattle farm and in 2010 we began to shift towards a grass only production model for the cows. We began making the switch to direct marketing by adding laying hens in 2012 and secured our permits to sell meat under our own label in 2014. Since then we have added meat chickens and turkeys.

The cattle are raised using a rotational grazing model and all classes of poultry are raised on the pasture using mobile structures. These systems allow for forage and soil management while letting us raise wholesome protein products without the use of sub-therapeutic antibiotics or growth hormones.

We offer a number of CSA options. More information about our CSA programs can be found here.  Learn more about all our products by visiting our online shop.

SUSTAINABILLIES

We live on an evolving mountain homestead in Haywood County, NC. Two Trees Farm is nestled in a high elevation valley in the Appalachian mountains. An amazing and challenging place to work towards living off the land; Our connection to nature inspires us to live lightly on the Earth and help others to do so as well.

Our CSA boxes are extremely diverse because we started our farm as a homestead. We have greens year-round due to our cool mountain farm, mushrooms flushing after the rain, and seasonal fruits appearing in a lovely sequence as the growing season progresses. We also include all the favorite veggies from tomatoes to peppers to squash. We also have herbs, edible flowers, and foraged treats that I find in the forest around the farm.

TEN ACRE GARDEN

The Ten Acre Garden is one of the few century farms still in operation in the region. Located in the fertile river bottoms in the historic Bethel Community, our CSA offers full or half shares and lasts for roughly 20 weeks during the growing season. Pickups generally start within the first two weeks of May and can run as long as the first week of October.

What makes our CSA different? At The Ten Acre Garden, families can be as involved in the farming process as they like. From Spring Planting Days to picking your own fruits and vegetables, parents and kids can really have the experience of watching their food grow. Strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry picking are great family activities too. And if you don’t care to get your hands dirty, you can just give us a call when you want to pick up your share.
